Bridesmaids speeches have now become a staple in the speech hierarchy. At one time the only person who spoke at a wedding reception was the best man as he offered a toast to the bride and groom. He then announced to the band leader it is time for the groom to retrieve the bride's garter and when it is time for the bride to throw the bouquet.

Today everyone in the main wedding party preforms wedding speeches and why not? It makes the day more fun as long as the speeches do not turn into a mean spirited roast, it will help make a memorable day even more memorable.
Bridesmaids speeches do not have to be long, in fact the shorter the better especially if there are several persons set to speak. The bridesmaid speech should mention their association with the bride - sister, cousin, mom or best friend – whatever it is. The bridesmaid may also want to mention how they know the groom or even if they do not know the groom. It will help the guests understand how the connections were made. It might help something in the speech to be understood better knowing the history of a few people.

If the bridesmaid is a friend mention how long you have known each other and where you know each other from. For example you could use something like this: “We met in kindergarten. She came into my classroom and asked if I wanted to go to her classroom and play. I didn’t know who she was, and I didn’t get along with many in my class so I said sure and went off to her class to play. My mother warned me about kids like her will always try to get you in trouble. I didn’t pay any attention to that, and we have been friends ever since.” You get the general idea!

If the bridesmaid is a sister there are a lot of stories that can be used like the time you decided to marry Bobby from next door. You used mom’s best doily for a veil and her best dress for a wedding gown. We made a toast with grape juice and it ended up all over your beautiful wedding gown which was mom’s best dress in disguise. Bobby said he had to go and didn’t have time to drop the dress off at the dry cleaners so we hung the dress in the closet hoping mom would not see it. If mom was a vengeful person she might walk up to the bride and spill a glass of grape juice on her wedding dress and not take it to the cleaners. But probably not.

The bridesmaid speech should focus on the bride, but a mention or two of the groom will be a nice touch for example: “When my friend the bride told me he was the one, I asked the one what? The one for today? The one until someone else comes along? The one picked to go into outer space on a trade mission to Mars?” When she told me he was the one to marry, I was disappointed. I thought I was going to get to know a real live astronaut.” If you add a little humor to your bridesmaids speeches they will be ones that are remembered for a long time.

The bridesmaid should wrap up her speech by thanking the bride for the honor and privilege of speaking at her wedding and for what a great friend she is! Thanks for reading.
