Bored of jogging? Try ice skating! - By: Davis Morris

If you want a high energy but low impact form of exercise that is fun and all the family can join in with then get to your local ice rink, put some ice skates on and you’re away! It may seem like a child’s sport to you or a one-off visit you do in the winter but ice skating can be a wonderful form of exercise all year round not just for the children but you too.

You are never too old to start and as it provides a great cardiovascular workout and can develop balance and coordination it will help you to develop a fit and healthy body. Winter can be a challenge for people wanting to exercise but if you choose a fun to do winter sport you can change all that.

One of the main benefits is that ice skating is low impact. This means it is much kinder to your joints than running for example yet you can still burn off the same amount of calories as you would if you were jogging. You will also enjoy toning your buttocks, calves, thighs and stomach.

A secret to an all round workout is to hold your arms out to help balance when skating. You can then develop the muscles in your shoulders, biceps, back and triceps. This will also lift the heart rate.

Ice skating is very effective for adults and can build endurance and balance. If jogging and cycling have never appealed then grab your ice skates and give it a go. Gyms can be boring and tedious whereas you’ll always feel challenged by this fun sport.

Wear multiple layers of clothing to the rink and invest in a good quality pair of ice skates. Stretch out before you start and warm down at the end.
