This job includes the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of different types of large containers or boilers used to store liquids and gases. The work of a boiler maker is demanding, challenging as well as rewarding. Apprenticeship is the most effective tool that helps in becoming an efficient boiler maker.

Nature of Work

They mainly work on boilers that create steam to supply power to electric turbines or form the central heating mechanism in residential houses. Vessels used for storing and processing alcohol, chemicals or other substances are also looked after by them.

While performing the task of routine maintenance, boiler makers have to check for the replacement of hoses and burners, repairing/installation of components and the due requirement of cleaning. At the same time, they ensure the durability and efficiency of the boiler. Dismantling the leaking boilers, restoring and replacing entire sections and tightening seams is also a part of their duty.

Required Qualifications and Training

The practical exposure and work experience is the most important requirement to become a boiler maker. Apart from this, a technical degree and apprenticeship under an employer is considered ideal for this job profile. In general, a formal training covers a span of 4 years including the time period of completing the technical course along with the practical training.

Major technical courses for boiler makers from utility point of view are methods of assembly, welding, assembly preparation and reading blueprints. In addition to these courses, training in technology up-gradation (either given by the institute or the employer) is also required.

Job Opportunities

Automation has made the job opportunities limited in this sector. Also, the growth prospects are low in boiler maker jobs as compared to other mainstream jobs. Still, the future is bright for qualified individuals with practical training and work experience.
