Bluetooth Headsets, Computer Headsets – A headset for every occasion - By: Gareth Hoyle1

You can rest assured that nowadays there’s a headset out there for every occasion, be it a Bluetooth headset for your mobile phone, a computer headset for when you’re talking to friends and family through internet telephony and a wealth of different headsets for use at work. There’s only one problem, which headset is right for you? With so many available it can be quite daunting. Here’s a little guide to hopefully make the process a little easier.

You’ll tend to find that the industries leading manufacturers, such as Plantronics, GN Jabra and Sennheiser dictate the trends and lead the way with brand new headset technologies and ingenious cutting edge designs and the other manufacturers follow suite. Before buying a headset it’s useful to check out these leading manufacturers websites to get a valuable insight into what’s currently out there.

Corded headsets were originally seen used in office scenarios and were the first used on a commercial basis. They are still hugely popular and tend to be the headset of choice in many call centres. They are mostly plug and play, which means they plug straight into the corded desk phone out of the box and don’t require anything in addition to work, apart from a compatible connection cable. Each headset manufacturer produces a number of connection cables and adaptors to help ensure virtual compatibility with every desk phone, from big switches to IP softphones. Out of all of the office headsets historically corded headsets tend to be the most inexpensive, however with the release of a number of new top end corded headset this is not necessarily the case anymore.

Styles within the corded headset groups can vary greatly giving you a plethora of choice and the ability to choose the exact headset for your needs. There are three main headset wearing styles to choose from, over the head, behind the head and over the ear with each manufacturer having a slightly different take on each one.

Also on offer is a choice of different microphone types, with standard microphones and voice tubes being suitable for quieter environments and noise cancelling and ultra noise cancelling microphones being the better choice for use in noisier environments. You can also choose between corded headsets with a single ear piece (monaural) and corded headsets with double ear pieces (binaural), as with the microphones, single ear piece headset are better suited to quieter environments and double ear piece headsets are more suited for noisy offices or for use by people with minor hearing difficulties as they block out surrounding noises and channel sound to both ears to let you fully concentrate on the call.

There are also a number of corded headsets that are ready to use on computers and PC’s. These types of headsets tend to be fitted with a USB plug or soundcard jacks to enable direct connection into the computer. This type of headset is extremely popular with gamers and internet telephony.
