Blocking Windows - By: Allan Michael Taylor

One thing that window blinds are popular for is blocking off the sun's light or any light that comes from outside. Little do people know, there are other advantages the window blinds can bring.

Window blinds are a specific type of window covering, contrary to popular belief. They would refer to the window coverings that make use of fabric, wooden or metal slats that would overlap each other when closed. When open, they would sit one on top of the other horizontally or one behind the other when vertically positioned.

The term was coined basically for the reason of its design. The blinds would partially or completely block the observer's view of the outside. Therefore, the piece would partially or completely "blind" the person looking out or looking in.

There are two kinds of window blinds. They are vertical and horizontal blinds.
Horizontal blinds make use of slats that would sit one on top of each other. These are suspended from an overhead bar. They are joined together by a string that would also allow the slats to rotate up from 90 to 170 degrees to open and close.

On the other hand, vertical blinds are similar to their brothers. The only difference is, as the name implies, would be that they would make use of vertical slats instead of horizontal slats. Vertical blinds would also have wider slats that would allow them to cover the width of the window.

The vertical blinds would be preferred over the horizontal ones for several reasons.

Both would have the benefits of blocking light and as well as the heat that the sunlight brings. It would also be able to help keep the temperature of the room. However, some of these attributes are done better by vertical blinds.

Vertical blinds would be best for completely blocking the light from entering the room. Its ability to close tightly would be responsible for its performance on that aspect. Since it would be able to block off the light, it would also be able to lessen the heat from coming in the room. It is not only because the vertical blinds would be able to close tightly, but also their slats would be thicker than horizontal blinds. These thicker slats would have the ability to absorb the heat. Some of these would also have a finish that would be helpful in repelling the heat to the outside.
The vertical blinds would also be more resistant to water and the wind. Horizontal blinds are known to be more brittle. Thanks to the thickness of vertical blinds, it would be a factor to their being able to hold against weather conditions better than horizontal blinds.

Vertical blinds can also be used in doorways. These would almost always be closed and would have slats made of fabric. The vertical blinds would allow a noticeable change in air movement and air temperature when opened, signaling that someone is entering or going out of the room.

There are a lot of benefits of window blinds like their being able to keep the temperature of the room. And these are being overlooked by most of the people. One thing that you would have to remember though is that the blinds would have to be in accordance to your home and your taste as well.
