Blinds, What It Is and Why We Need It - By: Allan Michael Taylor

It's human nature to develop and improve our surroundings. In terms of dwellings, we have gone a long way from the caves of the past, the holes in the ground, and the tops of trees. Today's houses are made of well-cut and treated lumber, cement and steel and concrete. Out of necessity, our builders have also developed the green house principle. The designs of energy efficient houses include large south facing windows and make use of double glazing in glass to counter-effect problems with insulation.

Window blinds are just one of the helpful and harmless things that civilization has invented to live well and comfortably, manage our immediate environment, and make our dwellings beautiful and attractive. It is a way of staking claim to a space by using our sense of style, when we decorate our houses in this way.

For comfortable living, a house environment should be clean and healthy. This is straightforwardly done with the use of natural methods for keeping a place fresh and bright. Windows are entryways for sunlight and wind, the world's built in free cleaning system. Imagine a house without windows. The rooms would be airless, stifling, and cramped. However, nature can be still be changeable. Sometimes, the sun is just too hot, sometimes the wind blows too strong, and in some times of the year it is just too cold.

Therefore we have found effective ways to control how much light and air to bring into a room. The best of these methods is by installing something called window blinds. It is to be strategically placed over a window pane, in an indoor wall, atop the jambs. This is the easiest method for controlling the environment somewhat. Long slats of hard material are strung together in overlapping rows. When fully extended, the slats lie flat. They are then effectively closing the window from too much light, cold and air. It is also possible half open the blinds. A cord is used to control this mechanism. Pull the cord and a ratchet type lock disengages; raveling or unraveling the slats. Nudge the cord in one direction, and the blinds lock at the point you have chosen. These also have mechanisms for opening and closing the individual slats, great for controlling light and maintaining privacy.

Vertical blinds are those special kinds that are intended for big windows and patio doors. They are mounted a bit differently, with two tracks instead of one, at the top and at the bottom of the window or door. The slats are bigger and wider and heavier. These are great for keeping sight of a beautiful garden view and taking advantage of the morning sun during the daytime. In the evenings, the blinds could just be kept shut to maintain privacy and insulate against cold night air. Aside from vertical blinds, there are a lot more kinds of window blinds. There are mini blinds and roman blinds, blackout blinds, horizontal blinds, remote controlled ones, bamboo, vinyl, fabric, and metal ones.
