Pieces of wood, bamboo, fabric, thin flat sheets of metal and vinyl. Who would have thought these would make for great coverings of our windows? And yet they are becoming more and more popular in home decorating circles. They are known to be durable, attractive, easy to mount, clean and maintain, and easy to operate. The materials are shaped into long, thin, strips called slats. These are joined up with cord. A simple mechanism finishes up the contraption. It is composed of a track, small rollers, fasteners, and a narrow box that covers it all. They are then called window blinds.

The choices range from the kind of material they are made of:
- wooden blinds
- vinyl blinds
- bamboo blinds
- aluminum blinds

To their sizes:
- mini blinds are those used to cover overly small windows, such as those found in some bathrooms and over kitchens
- Vertical blinds are named for the direction in which the slats are arranged, but are also defined by characteristics such as wider, longer, and thicker slats. These are used mostly to cover exceedingly large windows such as picture windows, French windows, and patio doors. They can also be found in some offices and business settings.

Window blinds are preffered by homeowners and decorators because of their ease of operation, straightforward mounting methods, range of design choices, and the subtle variations that can be achieved for opening and closing a window. The slats can be rolled up or sideways to fully open or they can be closed down with slats flat against each other to achieve a darkened room environment. Aside from this, the slats can be turned from one direction to the other. This can let you manage the level of privacy you need, the amount of view you want to see, and the light that you want to enter in the room.

All the types of horizontal blinds have cords on each side of the slats. These connect one to the other so that at the pull of a cord, all the slats bunch up one on top of the other. A rod then controls the open and shut movements of each individual slat. Vertical blinds operate in a slightly different manner. The longer and larger slats are independently connected to the tracks. These tracks are located both up and down the contraption for the vertical types. This allows greater support for the oversized slats.

Installation or mounting methods require just basic equipment. Screws, fasteners, and the other hardware needed for mounting are a part of the set when you buy any kinds of blinds. Personal tools include a hammer, a drill, a measuring tape, scissors, and a level. Only basic handyman skills are needed in its mounting. The instructions that come with the box are quite straightforward and easy to follow.

The incredible low maintenance needed in the care of window blinds merely requires some dusting, vacuuming, wiping, and occasional washing with soap and water. Aside from this, no other type of care is necessary. The blinds have been designed in such a way for the modern homemaker's convenience.
