Blackberry Pearl 3G: The First Blackberry without a qwerty! - By: Felicity Lightbody

April 26, 2010 phone manufacturer Research in Motion; famous for their Blackberry line of phones with qwerty style keypads announced they would be releasing an upgrade to the previously popular Blackberry Handset. The Blackberry Pearl 3G will feature many great changes but of the most surprisingly this handset will not feature a qwerty keypad but rather a traditional alphanumeric keypad.

The Blackberry Pearl 3G is a welcomed upgrade to the Pearl which many consumers have become disappointed with due to the dated technology. The new Pearl 3G will enable users to utilize 3G services from their network operators in addition to WiFi connections for internet capabilities. The Blackberry Pearl 3G utilizes a GPS chip to allow users to connect to Blackberry Maps and other GPS enabled applications.

One of the more common complaints with the Blackberry Pearl was the low quality 2MP camera which was far behind standards. The Blackberry Pearl 3G intends to change that by adding a 3.2MP camera which will allow for better quality photos using the handset. Consumers will notice the trackball is gone as well and replaced with the optical track pad.

The Blackberry Pearl 3G is much lighter than many other Blackberry models at just 3.3 ounces (93g). It measures roughly 4.25 inches by 1.96 inches and is quite thin at just 0.52 inches thick. The Blackberry Pearl 3G has drastically taken the traditional thick Blackberry look and scaled down into the appearance of a regular mobile phone.

The Blackberry Pearl 3G appears to be the first ever Blackberry phone which completely abandoned the qwerty keypad. This is a very controversial move seeing as how it is because of the traditional Blackberry qwerty keypad that Research in Motions' Blackberry line has become such a desirable phone enabling business users to quickly utilize the keypad to type long emails and just about anything else.

The Blackberry Pearl 3G features a standard mobile phone alphanumeric keypad. Each number typically doubles as being 3 different letters. This new Pearl 3G with the alphanumeric keypad is available only in the Middle East and Europe; American users still have the qwerty keypad available.

Although limited to the Middle East & Europe this is still quite a bold move from Blackberry to complete abandon their staple design and embrace a more traditional keypad. Many speculate this change was to make the Blackberry Pearl 3G more accessible to younger users rather than businessmen.
