Problem of black tongue also knows as black hairy tongue is a harmless condition that occurs due to unhealthy diet. Such problem is due to fungi or bacteria in the mouth. Because of this your tongue appears hairy and black. Treating it is not difficult. However, it is always better to take dental advice before treating it on your own.

There are many causes of black tongue. The basic reason is yeast or growth of bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria make small round projection, also called papillae. Papillae are on the tongue surface. Usually, Papillae shed on its own, however, when such disease comes, it starts growing and creates hair like projections. Such projections grow 15 times of their normal length.

Other Causes of Black Tongue
• Smoking tobacco
• Using antibiotics that affect the normal balance of bacteria in the mouth
• Oral hygiene
• Drinking a lot of coffee or tea
• Being dehydrated

Symptoms of Black Tongue
• Sensation of gagging in some people
• Yellow, black or brown discoloration of the tongue
• Altered taste or metallic taste in the mouth
• A hairy or furry appearance of the tongue
• Bad breath (halitosis)

Treatment
Such problem is not permanent. You can resolve it on your own once the incriminating factor is eliminated. To treat this problem, the basic thing you have to do is maintain oral hygiene. Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day and clean the tongue with tongue scrapper. Follow a proper diet and skip spicy and oily food. Drink at least two liters of water every day.

Nutritional deficiencies can also cause this problem. Hence, it is necessary to increase your mineral and vitamin supplements. Even if black tongue worries you, don’t get scared as it does not cause any problems to your health.

Even though black hairy tongue seems to be a cause of concern, it very rarely causes any health problems. Such problems can go without any medical treatment.
