The Birla Planetarium is one of the largest planetariums in Chennai. It is known for providing the virtual tour of night sky and the cosmic shows on the hemispherical aluminium dome on the inner side. It is located in the Periyar Technology Campus at Kotturpuram which has eight galleries and more than 500 exhibits. This planetarium was built in the memory of B.M. The Birla Planetarium of Chennai was inaugurated on 11th May 1988 by Mr. R. Venkataraman, the then President of India. The observatory features the use of computerized projector and GM II projector is the latest invention using this technology. The planetarium organizes a special show on every second Saturday of month for the people who are interested to look the meteoroids. The show is held from 7 to 9 in the evening. This place became very popular soon after its inauguration among the environmentalists, students, natural lovers and the people who have the passion for astronomy. The audio visual shows organized by the management not only enhance the comprehensive knowledge but also help in gaining the personal experience.
