Binaural Beats History - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Despite the fact that the recordings of binaural beats has only been obtainable from new technology, the understanding behind them has been fathomed throughout the centuries. Indigenous cultures have understood the benefits and power of binaural beats years before science has known about them.

Certainly these civilizations throughout the years did not name them binaural beats nor did they know what binaural beats were. All they knew was that steady rhythmic sound causes extremely powerful healing and spiritual effects. Scientist Melinda Maxfield, PhD, did studies on the drum beats used in the rituals of these different civilizations and discovered that they beat at a steady rate of 4.5 beats per second. This consistent beat creates a trance-like state to its listeners. This is caused by the brain shifting into a 4.5-beats-per-second brainwave frequency, which is a low Theta brainwave frequency.

In almost every culture throughout history, binaural beats have played an important part of the healing and spiritual development of man. With the use of consistent beats and chanting, the Tibetan monks, Native American shamans, Hindu healers, and mastered Yogis have been able to cause ranges of brainwave states for transcending consciousness, healing and spiritual development.

It wasn't until 1839, when Heinrich Wilhelm Dove found binaural beats, that science had finally found out about them. And though scientific research went on, binaural beats stayed a kind of conundrum for the next century. In 1973, Gerald Oster put together the numerous binaural beat research since Dove and wrote a paper called, "Auditory Beats in the Brain". In his research paper, Oster offered tremendous fresh insight and new laboratory findings to study on binaural beats.

Oster believed binaural beats to be a great tool for neurological and cognitive studies. He believed binaural beats could answer questions such as how animals could locate sounds in their three-dimensional environment and the remarkable skill of animals to focus on certain sounds with lots of other noises around them. He also thought binaural beats were a great tool for diagnosing medical problems. Not just auditory problems but also for more general neurological conditions.

Consciousness and binaural beats were first studied by Robert Monroe who sought to reproduce a subjective impression of 4Hz oscillation that they affiliated with out-of-body experiences. From the evidence of his discoveries, Monroe created the binaural beat self-development industry by creating The Monroe Institute, now a charitable binaural beat research and education organization.

From this time, binaural beats have been extensively researched and scientists know a tremendous amount about our brainwave frequencies and how they are changed by binaural beats. With this new research and technology, we have been able to create the powerful recordings that are out there today.
