Bike Courier Chic: Trends from the Delivery Industry - By: Norman Dulwich

Bet you didn’t know that those in the delivery industry were trendsetters, did you? Perhaps it’s the fact that there’s something romantic about the courier and his or her lifestyle - whether you are talking about someone on a bicycle or a person with a van or a truck. It could be the sense of freedom it evokes that people want to emulate, who knows?

However, take a look at any business district or high-end mall at any given time, and see just how many people are dressed in “courier chic”. Of course, for many of us in the delivery industry, fashion is a matter of function, and not style; but take a look at these clothes and accessories and see how many are obviously stolen straight from the messengers!

The Messenger Bag

The single-strap messenger bag, originally a bicycle messenger essential, is perhaps the most popular accessory that stems from the delivery industry. Chances are, you had one (or more) without a thought in the world of working as a courier! These days, practically everyone has a messenger bag - and why not? It’s the perfect way to store documents and makes a great looking accessory as well. Large enough to hold a wealth of items (not just documents, these days), you’ll see the messenger bag in trendy bars and bustling boardrooms – some bearing the labels of the most high-end designers, such as Vuitton and Armani.

Body-skimming Clothing

Sure, body-skimming clothing for women has always been around, but body-skimming (almost skin-tight) clothes weren’t always so popular for men until the delivery guy made it so! For a courier on a bicycle, such clothing is a necessity: they can’t risk loose clothing catching on anything – especially bicycle gears. However, for the average guy it’s just a way of showing off your body without being too obvious.

Caps

Whether they’re trucker caps or bicycle caps, no one can argue that fashionable headgear has now become extremely popular amongst the masses. Couriers everywhere can congratulate themselves on setting the trend and helping protect the hair and ears of ordinary people everywhere.

Below-the–knee Cut Pants

Hip hop and rap culture may take credit for the trend of oversized jeans that look like they’re about to fall off, but the delivery industry can take credit for something more chic that has been featured in many a male fashion show lately– the short-length pants. In the fifties, they were called pedal-pushers, for the obvious reason that they were cut short to avoid being caught up in the uncovered gears. The modern variations are streamlined, chic and look good enough for city office wear.
