Better Gas Power Power Plant MPG - By: Terry S Vostor

Although fuel injection has been used on and off for a number of years and in vehicles is really "nothing new", both concerns for gasoline fuel economy and vehicle emission reductions and control has resulted in almost all new and late model vehicles sporting fuel injection fuel systems. Old style carburetor fuel systems have gone the way of the dodo bird - certainly in any new cars and trucks and are indeed a rarity. To the greatest extent I can be said new advances in electronics and computerization have made the march of such sophisticated technologies all the more popular and commonplace in our new crop of modern and new vehicles - be they cars, trucks , sport utility SUV vehicles or what ever.

In their efforts to design and build cars with a greater amount of fuel efficiency and efficiencies , these auto makers have had to deal with most frustrating paradox; it takes a lean fuel/air mixture ( that is one that has relatively little proportion to air) to cut down on the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide which pollute the atmosphere , and to provide maximum fuel economies, but it takes a rich mixture to cut down on nitrogen oxides , which also pollute the air, and attain greater engine power. How to get the benefits of both , while avoid the pitfalls and related concerns and powers ? Only the EPA knows the full answers? Doctor you may recall or remember that the the proper proportions of air to gasoline fuel mixture is one part of fuel to 15 parts of air, that is by weight. Since its a well known fact of life that air can be counted on to be considerably lighter than gasoline liquid fuels, if we were to view this in terms of the amount of space taken up by these parts , it could be consummated to come to one part of fuel to 9,000 part of air by volumes. That is enough to fill a room 10 feet square for every gallon ( or 4 liters) of gasoline that we burn? No doubt even though low tech they worked and for the most part were reliable and could be counted on. When you step on the gas pedal to accelerate, there is a rod that connects the pedal to a little lever located on the outside of the carburetor which is sitting on the top of your engine. This little lever pushes on a piston inside the carburetor which squirts a little extra fuel into the venturi. That extra fuel creates a richer fuel/air mixture, which explodes with a big bang in your cylinders, and your vehicle gets an extra push we call "acceleration". Its sure low tech , but it packs a wallop which has won tons of auto races both on the race track and by young men cruising the roads and highways with their muscle cars and hot rods. The main job and function of the carburetor and carburetion system is to mix the proper proportions of gazoline and air together and to pass them along in the proper quantity and quantities to your engine. Along its path and roadway a carburetor performs any of a number of important engine and automotive functions and roles. In a gasoline engine , fuel injection eliminates the need for a carburetor by bringing the fuel and air together right in the intake manifold itself, which is just outside the combustion chambers of the engine. A constant supply of air is drawn through the air cleaner and past the throttle arrangement into the intake manifold itself.

Here tubes of equal length deliver an equal amount of air into each cylinder. This air is mixed with varying amounts of fuel from fuel injector valves located close to the combustion chambers themselves. Some systems work mechanically by using a meter and pump to regulate the action and actions of the valves. In other systems the valves respond to commands from electronic sensing devices and modules which receive a constant stream of inbound data on intake manifold pressure and changing pressures, intake. The longer the valve is open in a fuel injected system as a result of data from sensor modules , the more fuel it delivers to the combustion chamber and chambers. The richer the resulting fuel air mixture the more power the engine delivers and performance and acceleration speed ahead. In recent years fuel injection systems with advanced computerized electronic sensing devices have shown overall greater sensitivity and accuracy to repay their initial investment providing greater fuel economies ,cleaner exhaust emissions and more controllable power.Furthermore innovations in designs and manufacturing processes are producing cheaper and more durable systems.

Throttle body fuel injection is another type of carburetor-less system that mixes the fuel and air together right in the throttle of the car instead of using individual injectors to pump the fuel into each cylinder. These systems are overall less complex and complicated than individual fuel injection systems and are generally cheaper. Some of these systems use solenoids to spay the fuel into the airstream of the throttle through a fuel injector nozzle.
