What is light? Many of us may not know the answer of this question with precision. Light is electromagnetic radiation that is perceptible to the human eye. It has some distinctive wavelengths, which we see as colors. This is just a brief introduction to the light now we will discuss the lighting in our homes.

It is always necessary to choose a right kind of light for your room or home. Lighting scheme has a great influence on the individual as well as on the house atmosphere. A proper lighting scheme is definitely seem refined, relaxing and always welcoming. A good lighting scheme also adds something to the décor of the house.

Kinds of Light

Following are given the three main types of lights commonly used worldwide:

- General Lighting: These contain wall or ceiling fixtures, chandlers or hanging lights.
- Task Lighting: These are designed to reduce the eyestrain like desk lamps etc.
- Accent or Atmospheric or Ornamental Lighting: These are used to spotlight paintings, pictures etc.

One of the most important functions of designing energy efficient lights is to get the maximum from the light source. Unfortunately, this is not happened most of the time. We have often observed that, though the whole house or room is lit with bright light but yet we are not able to have enough light for our tasks like, sewing, writing or reading. This is all because of the poor use of the lighting sources. How you can get the most from your light resources. The only way is to direct these lights so that they focus the area where they are needed the most. This is not difficult - you can use your lighting in best possible way by directing them where they are required. Always go for the right kind of light you need for particular task.

- Selection: The first thing you need to decide is to see which kind of light you need. To reduce the wattage, you can use a reflector lamp of low wattage in spot fixture to get the same results as that from high wattage bulb.
- Light for Safety: At night you definitely need light at some areas to avoid injuries. Light your stairs (inside and outside stairs) with low level lights. Also you need a low level light on your exterior door keyhole.
- Light for Effect: Lighting effects are usually very attractive and eye catching. There are so many ways to use light to create special effects. The one way is to direct light from different direction, this is definitely attractive than having a light coming from a single direction. Dimmers with halogen lamp can be used as an energy efficient way for creating special effects. High wattage decorative lights can be used at special occasions. Use of mirrors can also be helpful to create special effects with multiple images. Light in glazed hole can also be used to create effect.
