Benefits of Electric Cars - By: Jonnie Blaylock

Electric cars have been announced repeatedly over the decades, but none has ever been successful. It has only been in the last couple of years that this has changed, mainly due to heavy restrictions on emissions and the concern of global warming. Several major companies are catching on to the possibilities of providing a clean running car and have added hybrid cars to their production lists.

New technology may have solved the biggest obstacle to electric cars for most people - range. New battery technology is promising longer lasting and faster recharging batteries in a smaller form factory.

Less weight and more power will equal greater range. With faster charging batteries, it may be possible to fully charge up while stopping for lunch on a trip.

There are many advantages in driving an electric car, and even the hybrid cars offer great benefits. The ones listed below are the more commonly known:

Cleaner Running Car: Electric cars are 100% emission-free - in the industry, they are known as zero emission vehicles (ZEVs). The electric engine does not run on diesel or gasoline, so heat does not radiate and exhaust fumes are not released into the air.

Better Fuel Efficiency: It is less expensive to create electricity than to produce, refine, and transport liquid fuels. There are many renewable sources for electricity such as solar panels and wind mills. By reducing our use of gasoline, world demand would go down lowering oil costs.

Simpler Motor: There are fewer moving parts in an electric motor than there are in a gasoline engine. That means that they are easier to maintain because there are fewer parts to break. You do not have to change the oil in an electric motor.

Less Dangerous: Since electric cars do not carry flammable fuel, there is no concern for large explosions during a crash. Gas is highly flammable and can explode in even a minor accident. The concept of burning fuel required operation at high temperatures which can also cause injuries. The boiling water inside radiators cause high pressures and possible dangerous scenarios. Many people have been scaled for life from hot radiators.

Also, gas engines must have a fan to pull cool air through the radiator. Family pets are notorious for crawling into engine compartments to stay warm only to be killed by the cooling fan or belts when the engine is restarted.

Save on Taxes: The federal government has been giving tax credits to anyone buying a new electric or hybrid car since 2006 - $3,500 can be obtained for certain models. Unlike a tax deduction, which only reduces gross income, the tax credit comes off the bottom line - your tax bill is reduced dollar-for-dollar by the tax credit.

Better Parking and Less Traffic: Some cities have granted electric and hybrid cars an exemption from carpool requirements restricting access to HOV lanes. Other incentives that cities have offered is free parking by meters and in pay lots.

A Quiet Car: Electric engines are not igniting explosive liquids, as gasoline engines require, in order for the vehicle to move; so they are much quieter than a gas burning car. Sometimes the loudest noise for these cars is the wheels rolling. Could you imagine being in traffic and not having to hear all those gas burning engines around you?

Our Country's Security: By reducing our dependence on foreign oil imports, heavy oil countries that support terrorist activities will no longer do so with our money. There will be fewer reasons that the government will send our soldiers off to the Middle East.

Utilize Existing Infrastructure: Our country already has electric networks that reach out to every city. It would be easy to recharge electric cars. Other options, such as hydrogen power, would require an infrastructure be constructed at huge costs.

Cleaner Environment: The act of removing fossil fuel from the earth, moving it through oceans and across land, and refining it into usable form creates other harmful effects. For example, razing of tropical forest.

Electric cars offer a clean, safe, low cost solution to our nation's energy problems. By combining electric cars with nuclear power plants, our country can generate clean electricity and eliminate the pollution from gasoline powered cars and coal-burning generating plants.
