To lose belly fat for good involves understanding where belly fat comes from.

Belly fat is caused by excess cortisol, a stress hormone that has an abundance of stress hormones in the inner-abdominal area. When it receives cortisol, it signals the nervous system to deposit fat in this area.

To keep belly fat from returning, the person has to recondition the body to handle stress.

This is because cortisol is a stress hormone.

Not only should you reduce cortisol, but you have to increase the tolerance level of the body!

If you just focus on reducing cortisol, the person will not leave the house! The ideal state is that what used to stress the body before now does not do this because the body is much more fit and stronger as well.

So the first stage is a recovery period for the nervous system to reduce stress and increase nutrient content of the cells. Then fitness levels are increased. Without doing this sequence, the belly fat will plateau.

So any exercise to lose belly fat should take cortisol into account because intense exercise causes increases in cortisol.

For women there is a difference. In my coaching, I address a primary difference between belly fat on women and men. For women, the health of the ovaries plays a major factor on belly fat.

Adrenals are the Backup Gland

When the ovaries are not able to produce estrogen and progesterone, the adrenal glands act as the backup gland. They take over and start producing those hormones.

Since cortisol is the main hormone that causes belly fat on women and since it comes from the adrenals, an event like a hysterectomy or menopause can cause excess cortisol and therefore belly fat.

This is also the reason for hot flashes.

This is why women who have had a hysterectomy or menopause often find this increase in abdominal fat.

When belly fat increases or hot flashes do not occur, the common denominator are healthy adrenals and a higher internal fitness level of the body.
