Beginning a Career as a Freelance Worker - By: Robert d. Watson

Freelancing, or working as a contractor for a company, is a challenging, but very rewarding profession that has been growing in popularity in recent months. The creation of the internet has allowed contractors to take their work home, no longer forcing workers to ever work at the employer's office. This is a huge advantage for both the worker and the company, as working from home is probably the most desired benefits of any position.

But what types of projects are available for work at home positions, and what tools and skills do you require to become a successful freelancer?

Telecommuters are able to do just about everthing that requires a personalcomputer. These positions can be almost anything from writing articles to creating graphics design jobs to writing programs, to coordinating the merging of multiple systems. If a personal computer is necessary, it can almost certainly be done entirely offsite, and there is almost always going to be a professional telecommuter who specializes in that style of project.

The kind of person who makes a solid telecommuter is a self-starter. Especially if you are a telecommuting freelancer, you require motivation and a talent to get projects organized and completed quickly. Freelancers need to be able to make decisions. Since the people who accept telecommuters are almost always managers, they often lack the technical understanding to be able to help a software designer with detailed clarifications. Freelancers must be very knowledgeable, and be able to figure out how to find the answers to issues that may arise.

Also, you must remember that freelancers are required to have the prerequisite software and tools in-house, or have them given by the company. Often, software and tools such as word processing software are available on the internet, however there are a few projects which often require expensive photo imaging software programs or hard-to-find compilers which are utilized by any given provider. If you are required by them to write a program a specific piece of software, it could be up to you, as a telecommuter, to buy the software program on your own though this is unusual.

Despite these problems, working at home is a great job for anyone with computer skills who don't desire to be held back. While Winning contracts on projects may feel unpleasant to you, you should find that your skills and abilities will be in demand after you create a name for yourself and receive some good feedback on your work. Doing that should permit you to charge higher fees and make even more money.

When beginning your career as a telecommuter, it is a good idea to bid on assignments that you are confident you can do very satisfactorially. This way you can ensure that you will not find many difficulties during the work, and that will lead to great feedback, and projects, in the future.
