Beginning A New Career - By: David Williams 2

Similarly, my mother worked as a teacher for sixteen years before she became fed up with how her school system treated its teachers. Both of them made these major career changes when they had just entered into their fifties.

Today, it is not all that uncommon to see other people doing exactly what my parents have done. It seems that in today's society, you can do whatever you want and be whatever you want and there is no age restriction on it. This is great news to those of us who still have a ways to go. It is also good news for the job market because this means that it creates more competition. Employers have to come up with different incentives and ways of making their job positions more appealing to the masses in order to attract the right kind of employee who will have the desire to stay for what the employer will hope to be is “the long run”. However, there is something to be said about the ability to switch careers whenever you want, and it is that doing so helps to keep you on your toes.

Too often, people become complacent at their jobs. They become complacent because they are often too comfortable. The perfect example of this can be seen with teachers who have tenure. Having tenure essentially means that it is incredibly difficult to get fired (unless you do something really wrong). But essentially, having tenure means that you don't really have to worry about whether or not you will have a job the next day. Sounds like a nice feeling, doesn't it? Well, unfortunately, for the rest of us, this isn't how our work like works. Especially now, when there are still so many people on unemployment, finding a job has become increasingly difficult over the last couple of years since the economy tanked. There is hope that things will turn around eventually, but even those of us who haven't entirely been affected by the economic dropout are still fighting off stomach ulcers caused by the anxiety that we feel over not knowing whether or not today will be “the day” when our luck runs out.

In many cases, those who are unable to find jobs are somehow finding the funding to go back to school to get their college degree in something that they hope will be significantly more marketable when it comes time to hit the want ads again. But even when these hordes of people eventually graduate college with that golden piece of paper declaring that they are qualified and ready (again) for the working world, will it be enough to secure them that coveted desk job shuffling papers? Needless to say, finding and starting a new career isn't impossible, but it certainly isn't without its difficulties either.
