If you are looking for a family friendly getaway, then a Beaufort, South Carolina vacation retreat is just for you. There are historic homes and churches to tour, unique shops and stores and southern hospitality galore.

It is the second oldest city in the state (Charleston being the first) and is in the Hilton Head area. The city has been called “The Best Small Southern Town” by Southern Living, listed as a “Top 25 Small City Arts Destination” by American Style, Field & Stream touts it as a “Top 20 Fishing Town” and the National Geographic Adventure has it listed as a “Top 50 Adventure Town”.

The down town region boast beautiful parks such as the Henry Chambers Waterfront Park, the history rich Old Point neighborhood, the Old Commons neighborhood where you will find graveyards, chapels and perhaps a few local legends and ghost stories. There are also numerous homes such as the Verdier House with the inviting architecture of the Old South.

With nearly 70 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, not to mention that its entire downtown area is listed as a historic location, you can truly get an appreciation for the beauty and romance of this small Southern town.

As you stroll the streets of Beaufort, you will find old homes that have been passed down generation to generation across from homes that have yet to reach the century mark, antebellum homes rich in antiques, ghost stories and Civil War memorabilia and modern day homes with beautiful landscaping. But no matter where you wander, you are sure to meet with friendly people happy to tell you about their town.

Due to its water access (Beaufort is the nautical gateway to the Intracoastal Waterway) there are numerous boat landing and areas for an assortment of water sports. So be sure to bring items like swimming gear, fishing and boating supplies, and any other items that lend to your water pleasure.

There are many ways to spend your time in Beaufort. Of course, you may choose to just sit back and relax. After all, vacations are meant to be enjoyed and with Beaufort as the backdrop, that is easy to accomplish.
