Beat the Gap Year Blues - By: Mark Bottell

A gap year can be one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of an entire lifetime. But how do you beat the inevitable gap year blues that are bound to hit upon your return? We look at a few ways in which you can integrate the experiences of your year out into your everyday life.

Take to the Great Outdoors
Whilst away on your gap year, you will undoubtedly have spent much of your time embracing nature and the great outdoors. Whilst on your return home, you may not be able to find animals or landscapes on quite the same scale, there are plenty of places where you can take to the great outdoors and prolong the feeling of being out in the wild. Simply replace game reserves with nature reserves, replace wildlife parks with local parks and you will be back to nature in no time. There are many protected areas closer to home in which you will find both expected and unusual species of animals such as birds and butterflies, as well as many beautiful and fascinating plants. Whilst they may be a great deal smaller than those that you might have seen on the game reserves, after your gap year you will certainly be able to appreciate the fragile and protected nature of the inhabitants of nature reserves, and a visit may well bring back happy memories of your time away.

Volunteer Some More
If you spent some time on your gap year volunteering you will be only too aware of both the good feeling it will leave you with, and the wonderful people and animals you will come across along the way. So, why not replicate those good feelings when you get home by volunteering at an animal rescue charity? Whether it is Battersea Dog’s Home, the Cats Protection Trust or something more general such as the RSPCA itself, there are plenty of animal charities simply crying out for help and volunteers. And if you don’t think that domestic animals will be quite exciting enough for you after the bigger, wilder animals of the game reserves, why not get involved in the fundraising side of things for a bit more fun and adventure?

If All Else Fails
And if all else fails and you simply can’t beat the gap year blues, then there’s only one thing for it – start thinking of ways to get yourself back out to the game reserves. Perhaps the best way to fund another gap year is simply with a normal job, or maybe you could make it a little more interesting for yourself by doing your own fundraising. Either way, if you really cannot beat the gap year blues, then the best thing to do is to find a way to get yourself back out there.

So, when the gap year blues strike, don’t despair, as there are many ways in which you can bring back elements from your time away and introduce them to your life at home. Whether you miss the nature, the wildlife or the people, there are plenty of all of the above to be found a little closer to home.
