Well, winter is upon us! Ready? Is your car ready? Don’t let your car be one of those found on the side of the road, stuck for hours.Take care of it at the first hint of cold weather. Break downs are such a hassle, not to mention extremely dangerous in the middle of a huge snowstorm. Please take this advice to winterize your auto for the safety and wellbeing of you and your loved ones. A little effort so outweighs the consequences for not paying attention to this most important, potentially deadly matter.

To get a good head start on winterizing your car, always have the regular maintenance done on the car throughout the year. That includes changing the antifreeze/coolant about every 30,000 miles. Check the antifreeze by looking at the level indicator on the reservoir. It should be able to withstand temperatures up to 35 degrees below zero. Make sure hoses are not leaking or brittle. Keep the car’s gas tank as full as possible to prevent the gas line from freezing. All fluids should be topped off. Use a lightweight, winter-grade oil as regular oil thickens in extreme cold. Winter weather increases the power demand on your auto. It is a very good idea to have the battery tested on a meter at the beginning of the winter season. Before turning the car on, turn off the radio, heater, lights, anything pulling battery power. Once started, make sure the heating system works properly as well as the front and rear window defrosters. Look for holes in the floorboards and trunk to prevent carbon monoxide exhaust fumes fr

om getting into the closed car as you are traveling. Use winter washer fluids making sure that wiper blades are in good condition. Tires should be properly inflated so as not to cause handling problems on snowy or icy roads.

In a lot of areas there will be salt on the icy roads. When you begin to winterize, it’s a good idea to thoroughly wash and wax the car before the first snowfall to protect the paint from snow, ice and salt damage.

Keep a plastic ice scraper inside the glove compartment. Plastic won’t scratch the windshield. Keep an emergency kit and a set of jumper cables in the trunk. For more severe weather areas, it’s good to have tire chains too. Keep a scrap of carpet or even a bag of cat litter tohelp with traction if the car were to get stuck in icy mud or snow.

When taking a long trip, carry a bag stuffed with blankets, scarves, mittens, big coats and extra socks. This will go a long way in helping to prevent frostbite. Carry flashlights, flares, extra wiper fluid and drinking water. If at all possible, always have a fully charged cell phone with you.
