Be Good to Your Dog - By: Chris Robertson

Pets are a big part of our lives. They entertain us, they comfort us, they keep us company, and they even let us tell them our deepest, darkest secrets without judging us. We try hard to give them the best life has to offer, and that includes making sure they are happy and comfortable, with good food, toys, comfortable cat or dog beds, and lots of tender loving care.

No matter whether your pet lives indoors, outdoors, or a mixture of both, comfortable cat or dog beds of high quality are a must. Waterproof dog beds come with a removable, washable cover. They are handy because they won't stay wet and develop problems with mildew, plus they are easy to clean and care for. They are practical, comfortable and offer warmth and insulation for your pet as well.

Lots of people are opting to take their dogs with them when they go shopping, to movies, or to the park for a run or just to play. Soft fabric dog crates are a perfect solution, as they are lightweight, comfortable, and collapsible for easy storage when not in use. Some dog crates have steel internal frames, whereas some look more like a handbag or attache case. These are often used when flying on an airplane with a small dog or cat. When purchasing a pet crate to be used when traveling, be sure to give your pet adequate time to become comfortable in its new habitat, as this will make the trip less stressful for all involved.

Dog cages are available in a large variety of sizes, styles, and materials. Some dog cages fold flat for easy storage, whereas other are rigid in their construction and must be disassembled for storage. When training a new puppy or a misbehaving adult dog, crate training is often the best answer. By crate training a dog, you can cut housebreaking time drastically, you can solve behavioral problems such as chewing, barking, and scratching, and you are giving your beloved pet his or her own space.

Sometimes crate training simply is not enough. Some dogs just like to be vocal and can drive everyone crazy in the process. Dogs bark for any number of reasons, some good and some not so good. We actually want our dogs to bark as a sign of danger or warning of a potential intruder, but barking at birds and squirrels is unacceptable behavior, especially when the dog is indoors! It is possible to re-train your dog so that he doesn't bark for recreation. There are some ingenious dog training collars on the market that urge your dog not to bark by spraying harmless but unpleasant citronella on the dog when he does bark while wearing the collar. Within a few days the dog learns to stay quiet while wearing the collar and to concentrate on other activities.

We love our pets and we spend a lot of time with them. Statistics show that we also spend a great amount of money on them. We buy food and toys, cat or dog beds and crates, and we spend money on shots and veterinary visits. It's money well spent. We rely on our pets to be there for us and to be our companions when we need them. Pets make our lives happier and many believe that we live longer, happier lives because of our relationships with our pets.
