Batteries are used for a number of machinery and devices within our homes, offices, institutions and several other places. Although there have been many rechargeable batteries being introduced onto the market that slows us down in purchasing batteries, it has not stopped us from buying batteries completely.

The amount of unusable and unwanted batteries that are disposed of incorrectly within the UK is currently over 90 per cent which is unfortunately a staggering and pretty shameful compared to other parts of the world. As a result of this lack of care; our environment is becoming increasingly affected from these harmful and hazardous wastes.

Thankfully however, since the 5th May 2009 the battery recycling regulations came into force whereby batteries should be recycled and disposed of correctly and that standards have been put in place to increase the percentages of the amount of batteries that are being recycled. As from the 1st February 2010, all retailers that sell batteries over 32 kilograms per year will need to provide battery recycling bins for consumers.

Battery recycling bins are now being sold in a lot more places than before but unfortunately, the UK have never been a place where recycling battery has been a top priority and on many occasions, batteries have always been disposed of within normal household bins. Hopefully this new legislation brought out will encourage a lot more people to recycle their batteries because nearly all shops will have battery recycling bins available for them to dispose of correctly.

Batteries as many of us are aware can be harmful and hazardous, without these battery recycling bins; a lot more unwanted and unusable batteries will be continued to be disposed of within household bins, causing more and more damage to the environment. Every supermarket have been offering battery recycling bins and it is likely that everyone will stop by at a supermarket during the month, so taking the batteries along should not be a problem.

Battery recycling bins are just a start for us consumers to act now and think about the environment before continuing our bad habits which in the long term could have a major impact on our planet.
