As a Yorkshire Marriage ceremony Photographer, I often write articles about camera process and photographic style. Today I'm writing for the wider photographic community approximately photographers' backup strategies so if 'tech-geekery' is not really your thing then other articles I've written may be of more interest. The topic of this informative article is really important and one that I have been meaning to talk about for a long time and is definitely helping me sleep more easily.

Clients quite often ask me about my backup strategy, especially marriage ceremony clients, and without going into too much detail I explain that backup along with the redundancy plan of those backups means that I will always have at the least 3 copies of a married relationship or commercial job to rely on in the event of a disaster. Disasters do happen and the wonderful disasters come in all manner of forms from natural phenomenon which include fire, electrical failure and flooding through to simple human error including driving over a laptop - yes this has happened to me! Having worked as a photographer for over decade now, I have recently been very secure with my own backup strategy, it was much different back in the days of dvd when there would only ever be one set of negatives so they ALWAYS lived in the fire proof safe but digital images allow me to easily make copies - so that i do and in galore amounts!

What follows is an explanation with my backup strategy i use day in day out and it helps me sleep very easily at night.

Inside field I use (A) Sandisk Ultra II 4 gb compact flash cards in my Nikon D700 cameras. I never use cards larger than this because if some sort of card fails, is lost or stolen at least I have a job spread over several cards and all may not be lost. At the average wedding I shoot at the least 24-30 gigs (that's available 2500 images) so easily shot 16gb cards, the stakes would be a lot higher! Once I've filled a card up, I then copy it in the field to 2 devices at the same time (B) Some sort of Jobo Giga One digital Wallet and a (C) MacBook Professional player The digital wallet originally shipped which includes a 40gb hard drive but May possibly modded it with a more substantial 160gb drive to obtain additional stuff on it.
