Basic Requirements for Catering Businesses – Caterers Liability Insurance - By: Jenna Jones

Congratulations for those who are thinking about starting their own catering business. This is a fun and profitable business which could be set up anywhere. It can mean a lot of hard work but it is emotionally and financially rewarding.
Before starting a home based catering business, it is important to know what the basic requirement are so they could be met properly which will make sure the business gets off on the right foot. Here are the requirements for starting a catering business:

1. Caterer’s liability insurance policy – this is number one requirement the councils insist on. Many think that it could be very cost prohibitive, but it actually does not. This is a great policy to have under the belt of any service company for it could save the company later on.

2. Health permits of both owner and staff – this is the standard for any business which deals with service and food. There will be an inspection for the kitchen premises where the food is to be prepared, both the owner and the staff would also have to undergo a medical to clear them of any diseases like Hepatitis A, also the equipment used within the business would have to go through inspection for they would be in contact with the food prepared.

3. Business permits – this is the obvious. The permits cannot be awarded if the insurance policy and the health permits are not granted. No one wants to hire a caterer without a licence to operate for there are potential health risks involved.

4. A cook. Okay, obviously this is the most important of them all, for without a good cook who is flexible and inventive as well as creative, there is no catering business. The cook, probably the owner or a business partner, has to be good, if not downright fantastic. Without this great cook then the catering business is non-existent.

There may be other requirements for the setting up of the catering business; however, the top four are listed above. Some localities would have their own requirements for new business owners and it is best to investigate what those are.

Once all of the requirements are met then the catering can begin and the profits
(hopefully) will start rolling in. but remember, this is a risky business and the best weapon the business owner could have is the caterers liability insurance. This will protect the company’s reputation and cement financial stability. Without the insurance policy, people will think twice before hiring.
