Baiyang Lake, the largest lake on Haihe Plain, is located in the center of Hebei Province. With an area of 336 kilometers, Baiyang Lake is compromised of 143 lakes of different size and Baiyang Lake is the largest one. So the whole area is called Baiyang Lake. The lake is rich in fishery resource. There are more than 50 kinds of freshwater fish. The clear water, chirp of birds and fragrance of lotus make up a picturesque view. Therefore, the Baiyang Lake area is praised as the “pearl of North China”. In May 8, 2008, Baiyang Lake was designated as the 5a tourist attraction by China National Tourism Administration.

The vast water area and beautiful scene make the Baiyang Lake area a best summer resort. This area has the four distinctive seasons. Many places of historic interest are by the shadow of Baiyang Lake. The ancient emperors came here in summer so that four palaces were built. According to legend, the Laowang Lake is the site where the Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty was saved by a fisherman.

The best time to visit Baiyang Lake is summer and autumn. It is cold in winter and windy and dusty in spring. The Lotus Festival has been held from every July 23 to September 23 since 1991. The festival has three themes. The theme of the July is “Chu Shui Furong” (Lotus Standing Above Water). In July, the lake is covered by the endless sea of lotus. The theme of August is Bai Li He Xiang (Fragrance of Lotus Spreads hundreds of Miles in English). The August is the time of lotus blooming. Baiyang Lake Tourism Department holds some activities including Angling Match, photography exhibit. The theme in September is the Lotus Pool by Moonlight.

Baiyang Lake has the fine revolutionary tradition and is also famous for an author, Sun Li. Baiyang Lake is set in his many novels.
