Bagging a Sustainable Option for Retailers - By: Davis Morris

The war on carrier bags continues to be waged by the government, environmental campaigners, the media and the retail sector, which are all in agreement that usage needs to be reduced in order to protect the planet and its wildlife. Many are, however, sometimes at odds with how this needs to be instigated, maintained and supported by consumers. Shoppers do, after all, need to physically transport their purchases back to their destinations after completing their transactions and there is a fear amongst retailers that, whilst supporting the campaign ethically, any barriers to their shoppers’ convenience will have the adverse effect of simply redirecting them to alternative competitor stores where obstructions to perceived good customer service are not presented.

A spokesperson for the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has recently announced that: “Shoppers in the UK each get through 13000 carrier bags in their lifetime. We can’t continue this – it is a huge waste and a visible symbol of our throwaway society.”

Suppliers of bags to the retail sector have made a concerted effort to increase their output of bio-degradable carrier bags and degradable plastic bags in support of the outcry, as most consumers will have seen. Biodegradable carrier bags have a lifespan of up to a year in a darkened storeroom before starting to naturally degrade as a result of exposure to air and natural light. Degradable plastic bags have a two year lifespan in the same conditions, but automatically degrade after this period regardless of where they are or the conditions in which they are stored and do not have to be buried like their biodegradable counterparts.

We, at Morplan, offer biodegradable carrier bags to our retail clients and degradable plastic bags which are date stamped at the point of manufacture to ensure their timely usage without wastage and lost revenue.
