Backpacks – Getting the Fit Right - By: Jenna Jones

Backpacks are commonplace and they are used for many purposes. But what not everyone knows is that backpacks have to fit the body right to function properly. It is not right just to go out and buy the first thing that attracts the eye. For one thing, the body’s torso length is very important, and this is a detail that many are not aware of. Take it this way: backpacks are not ‘one size fits all.’ So, here are some tips on getting the right backpack with the right fit.

1. If the pack is too long for the torso of the user then the bottom of the pack could sag to the buttocks which could cause chafing. If the pack is too short then it could just hang above the buttocks and would offer no support for the lower back. This could result to straining on the muscles and spine and maybe injuries.

2. Determining the torso length – run the fingers at the base of the neck and search for the 7th vertebrae or that bony protrusion. Measure from there until the small of the back or the vertebrae that line up with the hipbones.

• <18” or 45 cm – small suspension size
• 18” to 20” or 45 to 50 cm – medium suspension size
• >21” or 52.5 cm – large suspension size

3. Measure the hip belt size – the hip belt should cup the hips when the belt is tightened and the pads should not be touching.

• Women – straight to narrow hips – standard hip belts
• Men and Women – curved hips – women’s specific model

The shoulder straps have to anchor the backpack a little below the protrusion on the neck base or 7th vertebrae all the way to the top of the shoulders. They should be comfortable and secure wrapping around the shoulders the least 5 inches under the armpits.

Determining the size of the backpack will also determine the right size of the backpack, however, this could also depend on the type and amount of activity the user is planning.

As could be seen, the saying that ‘bigger is better’ does not hold water here. It should also be very important that the salesperson assisting you should know how to measure the torso length properly for they can guide you to the right product. Be very careful of sweeping statements where they can lead you to buy without the benefit of measurements.
