Back To Basics With Health Care - By: Shaun Parker

This is the time of year when health and fitness tips abound throughout the press. There will be various diets touted about as the latest thing to make you slim and happy and a whole host of new fangled exercise equipment to improve the look of our bodies.

Of course, it can never hurt to look after our health and take precautions such as private health insurance and regular GP check-ups. It also helps to take sensible advice on health issues. But what is sensible and what is faddy? Every diet guru will swamp us with 'research' that proves their theory yet mankind has managed for a good number of years without this type of help.

If we can look after our hearts and minds to the best of our ability, then we are off to a good start. But how to do this without falling foul of the ridiculous?
It has long been maintained that we should do everything in moderation but surprise of all surprises, this is not the quick fix that fad diets promise to be. However, a dietician has made it public that this is exactly what we should be doing.

Depriving ourselves of any of the main food groups leads to health problems, hormonal issues and depression swiftly followed by feelings of stress, guilt and then over-indulgence brought on by comfort eating.

What mankind has known and managed on since the beginning of time is that a little of what you fancy does you good. The problem arises when you over do anything. We've been given all sorts of conflicting advice about eggs, for instance. How many is ok and how many are going to lead to all sorts of nasties that will shorten our lifespan.

Of course, it will always be best for us to eat relatively healthy but that doesn't mean cutting out things like butter, it means cutting down on things like margarine that the body has difficulty with. What we often forget though, is that the body is an amazing machine. It repairs and replaces and rejuvenates all the time if we allow it to.

Exercise, again, is either something you love or dread. This is another aspect that doesn't need taking to extremes. Exercise can be built into our daily lives by making those small changes that count - taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking to the local shops instead of driving - exercise does not need to be a chore.

Taking note of the simple things; listening to what our bodies need instead of silencing them with comfort food, resting when we need it instead of over stretching ourselves and hydrating ourselves as much as possible will see us getting the most from our bodies and hopefully making less claims on our private health insurance or the time of our GP.

Of course, there are sensible suggestions that we can learn from the press that could help with our health and fitness but we need to learn to filter the sensible from the extreme. If an issue concerns you, it would be wise to take a closer look at the research that has been carried out and also to take your GP's advise before embarking on any change to your lifestyle.
