Baby Snugli Carrier - Is It Any Good? - By: Tim Hansen

The Baby Snugli carrier has been around since 1968 and was first invented by Ann Moore, a mum who discovered on her Peace Corps journey to Togo in Africa that those babies who were carried close to their mum seemed to be calmer and happier than those who didn't. Back in the States at that time it was common to leave the baby in one of those plastic carriers, so Ann decided to invent the Baby Snugli carrier.

The Snugli range consists of four basic models: Front Snugli, Front Snugli Vented, Front and Back Snugli and the Seated Snugli. Common for every baby snugli carrier is that is has:

# one-handed buckle
# padded shoulder straps
# adjustable pull straps
# automatically adjusting back straps
# easy clean fabrics that come in many different styles

A Baby Snugli carrier range in price from $40 to $80 depending on which model you want. We have had a look at each of these four carriers, reviewed them and given each Baby Snugli carrier a score out of 5.

Front Snugli RRP $39.99

The Front Snugli is recommended for newborns and smaller babies and is supposed to carry up to 22 lbs. We certainly would not use this carrier for any baby above 16 lbs, as it does not have a lumbar strap, which means all of the weight will be distributed across on shoulders. This baby snugli carrier is well padded and lightweight, allows for the baby to be facing you or the front, but is unfortunately not very versatile and has limited use. It would be great for the first 3-4 months, however if you want to continue carrying, you might have to look for a different baby carrier. Score 2.5/5

Front Snugli Vented RRP $49.99

The Front Snugli Vented is exactly that, the Front Snugli with vents. It is basically the same baby carrier that has vents on the sides for the baby on hot days and cost an extra $10. If you liked the sound of the Front Snugli and want the baby to stay cool in hot weather, go for this one. Score 2.5/5

Front and Back Snugli RRP $69.99

The Front and Back model is the best-selling baby snugli carrier. It allows you to carry the baby both on the front (facing in or out) and on the back, which is great for those long hikes. It has a well padded lumbar strap which appears to distribute weight evenly between the pelvis and shoulders. It also has handy pockets for you to store the essentials when on the go. This baby snugli carrier is very similar to the Baby Bjorn Active, however it cost a fair bit less. It also has an adjustable seat that grows with the baby. We would recommend this carrier up to 25 pounds. This Baby Snugli carrier is good for both mums and dads as it can quite easily be changed to accommodate for smaller as well as bigger individuals. Score 4/5

Seated Snugli RRP $79.99

The Seated Snugli is meant for bigger babies, up to 40 lbs. It let the parent carry the baby on their hips on the front or back. The great thing about having the ability to carry the baby on the hips is that it gives you that extra hand to work with whilst carrying the baby. This is especially convenient for those mums caring for more than one baby. This Baby Snugli carrier has the same padded lumbar support as the Front and Back Snugli and a large compartment for storage of wallet, spare nappy etc. when you are out and about. This might not be the ideal carrier for infants, however it is a very good alternative for babies older than 2 months. Score 4/5
