BMX: safety AND enjoyment first - By: Brigette Federico

Much as BMX in all its disciplines is loved for its thrills and excitement, at the end of the day there is no getting away from the fact that BMX is a potentially hazardous extreme sport.

At the same time whilst many amateur BMX riders would of course love to become as good as professional riders, they should in the meantime reflect on the fact that they do not have the same degree of skill or experience as the professionals.
As such, taking a chance on, for example, not wearing a protective helmet like some professional riders, or doing away with brakes as others do in order to try and gain a more controlled balance over the bike and reduce overall weight, are positively not to be recommended.

Likewise the more extreme tricks should only be attempted after a prolonged period of training with a qualified professional.

That said, enjoyment of BMX does not have to be thwarted by health and safety worries. On the contrary, a few simple safety steps can give the green light to years of continued BMX enjoyment, with the risks of being out of action through injury greatly reduced.

First of all, even before taking a BMX bike out, it is always vital to check it over for any cracks or signs of corrosion. These can lead to snaps which, during mid-performance, can in turn lead to nasty falls and collisions.

Protective gear is also a must. Contrary to what some would argue, quality branded safety accessories such as helmets, wrist bands and knee and elbow pads, do little to restrict movement or hamper enjoyment of BMX activities.

At bmx.co.uk we stock a great range of cool safety gear because we know that if we look after our customers they will carry on riding and enjoying BMX, and of course come back and visit.
