BEST WAYS FOR SWINE FLU PREVENTION - By: Ron Heggemeier

We all have the fear that we will get the swine flu but don’t know what we can do to prevent the swine flu or what are the best ways for swine flu prevention. When I talked to my doctor in August all I got in the way of advice was to wash my hands a lot. While that is a great idea it is not enough. We must do more and what follows are the best ways for swine flu prevention:

Number 1. Get the swine flu shot as soon as it is available if advised to do so by your doctor. Current predictions are mid-October.

Number 2. Wash your hands regularly with soap and hot water. You can’t overdue this one.

Number 3. Clean doorknobs, light switches, telephones etc. with an alcohol based product.

Number 4. Use tissues to contain secretions while coughing or sneezing.

Number 5. Dispose of used tissues frequently to avoid chance of spreading the virus.

Number 6. Avoid large crowds if possible. This means movies, sporting events, etc.

Number 7. Do not travel to parts of the country or abroad where the swine flu is rampant.

Number 8. Avoid crowded areas where you could get exposed. i.e. planes, trains, buses.

Number 9. Use sanitary wipes provided by grocery stores to wipe cart handles before use.

Number 10. Do not share eating or drinking utensils with others.

Number 11. Eat healthy (fruits and vegetables) and get plenty of rest to keep immune system boosted.

Number 12. Keep hand sanitizer with you at all times. Use it frequently after touching public surfaces.

Number 13. Talk to your boss and get him/her to encourage sick co-workers to stay home.

Number 14. Telecommute when at all possible especially if the swine flu is at the office.

Number 15. Swine flu is a virus-don’t waste time with anti-bacterial products – use alcohol based products.

Number 16. Take vitamins and supplements that are known to boost your immune system.

Number 17. If you must care for a person with swine flu where a mask.

Number 18. Avoid over touching of your eyes, mouth, and nose to prevent taking in the virus.

Number 19. Talk to your children about prevention tips to avoid having them bring it home.

Number 20. Eat in more often – avoid food care workers who may be spreading the virus.

Swine flu prevention is a critical step in slowing down the spread of this year's swine flu pandemic. It is up to all of us to do the best job we can to prevent the spread of this disease. Doing so is one of the best things we can do in addition to finding any and all methods to protect our families and loved ones.
