According to Ayurveda, every individual differ in constitution or nature (prakriti) and that is what makes them unique identities. Ayurveda broadly classifies human body constitution into three doshas: vata constitution, pitta constitution and kapha constitution. It is very essential for Ayurvedic physician to examine and learn patient’s constitution in regard to diagnose, cure and prevent the health ailments. Ayurveda specifically describes about the nature of diseases and the treatment pattern that change according to the body constitution.
Vata constitution
The vata dosha is made up of two elements –air and space. The air and vitality or prana’s functionality is to control the body systems and movements. Vata can be correlated to the nervous system of the body.
Certain properties that we can find in vata constitution
• A person is very active and full of enthusiasm
• A vata constitution person talks and walks swiftly
• They may suffer from sleeplessness
• A vata constitution individual is known for their inconsistency and unsteadiness
• An individual with vata constitution will have flickering mind and haste decision
• A person is tall and thin –long bones and hair
• A person will have comparatively dry skin and hair
The very nature of vata dosha is dryness that is visible in an individual with vata constitution, literally. Vata dosha constitution person will have their choices more toward heat/hot and moist environment. The digestive fire, the agni in vata constitutional human body will be high and they can digest heavy meals. On the other hand, they at times complain about indigestion and bowel problems.
According to Ayurvedic scholars and gurus, this constitution as a whole is quite difficult to control in anger. Also, it has rapid deployment of the matter and energy. In addition, Charaka Samhita mentions that most of the diseases occur due to vata dosha involved in it. Furthermore, Ayurveda science also believes that though pitta dosha and kapha dosha are chiefly involved in any diseases occurrence, they are mainly supported by vata in all cases. Said this, without vata dosha, it is difficult for pitta and kapha to go vitiate and produce illnesses. Vata constitution human body for this reason is more prone to have various health ailments.
The properties of vata dosha are pungent, sharp, dry, subtle, nimble and cold. It is for this reason, cold food, dry food, too spicy food increase the vata dosha in one’s body. On the other hand, foods that have opposite quality to vata dosha (such as oily food, food that is heavy to digest (like ghee), hot food etc.) can pacify the vata dosha. The person with vata constitution should prefer taking foods that are opposite to vata qualities.
