Avs get rid of yet again with Varlamov in net, this time to Edmonton Oilers, 3-2 - By: Alphonse Clark

Taylor Hall scored in the third period to give Edmonton a two-objective cushion and the Oilers beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Tuesday night. Game notes. "Now it is post all-star break, and I think there is another gear you require to get too. A lot like if you happen to be a team that tends to make the playoffs. In order for us to obtain what we want to attain as a team, we have to find that subsequent gear correct now," Avs coach Joe Sacco said just before the game.

Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Eric Belanger scored for the Oilers, who had lost eight of nine ahead of going 2--1 in their last 3. Dubnyk, the backup to Nikolai Khabibulin for the bulk of the season, has created 118 saves in the course of his three-game run.

Edmonton came close to scoring 3 minutes in when Ben Eager sprung Anton Lander on a breakaway. Lander had Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov beat with a backhand that hit the post and rattled out of harm's way.

Tuesday marked Varlamov's first action in just over two weeks after giving up six goals Jan. 16 in a 6-1 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes. The goalie was tested early and usually by an Edmonton team that came into the game 14 points out of the playoff image.

Jordan Eberle's 19th goal of the season on a nifty wraparound effort 4:59 into the 1st period opened the scoring for Edmonton.

"There wasn't sufficient desperation," he said. "This is playoff hockey for us proper now and we need to have to have much more urgency appropriate from the start. You have to be ready to begin on time in this league. This is a no-excuse business."

"We took an unnecessary penalty, a high-sticking penalty that price us a double-minor, and they scored. That's a lack of discipline, and you can't afford to take those penalties," Sacco mentioned.

The Avalanche created it a 2-1 game just over a minute into the second period when Kobasew threw the puck through the crease and Mueller was able to whack in his fourth of the season.

Edmonton kept the pressure coming with 5 minutes left in the opening frame when Ales Hemsky had the Colorado netminder beat but hit the team's second post of the night.

The Oilers regained their two-goal benefit six minutes into the third when Varlamov allowed a large rebound on Hemsky's shot and Hall was there to shovel in his 17th of the season.

Colorado had its finest chance to that point seconds later when Chuck Kobasew nearly had a short-handed break on the second half of a double-minor penalty, but Dubnyk hustled out of the net to poke-check the puck away.

The Avalanche produced it a two-1 game just more than a minute into the second period when Kobasew by way of the puck through the crease and Mueller was able to whack in his fourth of the season.

"It looked like two teams that were going to have another day off," Oilers coach Tom Renney said immediately after his team's 1st game since the All-Star break.
