Avoiding the “Rude” Label: Office Etiquette - By: Rutland

The office environment can present a tricky dichotomy between familiarity (e.g. working with the same friendly people each day) and the need to maintain an atmosphere of professionalism. Being new to an office environment often presents a minefield of potential etiquette gaffes that could see the latest office addition left off the corporate e cards birthday and Christmas list unwittingly!

Issues of personal space invasion, bad manners and so are incredibly counterproductive. Developing the right diplomacy skills to deal with such situations is incredibly beneficial.

Temper, Temper
Everybody loses their temper from time to time. But, keeping a tight rein on emotions within the workplace will always win out. Perhaps some menial task falls on the shoulders of the new team member – organising corporate e cards for the birthdays of unknown department staff, maintaining the coming year’s business Christmas cards list, nipping out for the coffee etc. ALWAYS remember that the workplace is a site of negotiation and sensible solution.

Desk Duty
For most office-based employees, the desk is likely the only area of personal space within the office environment. Showing respect for the desk space of fellow employees is a courteous way to garner trust, respect and acceptance. Avoid using other’s desks as dumping grounds (e.g. “I’ll just leave this box of files here while I nip out for lunch”), never borrow anything without asking, and keep away from the temptation to judge others on their messy or overly-decorated desks (even if they still have last year’s business Christmas cards up in May!)

Clean and Tidy
Many individuals are wary of falling into the trap of being “the one who….” in terms of tasks like emptying the bin, cleaning the coffee mugs, taking the dirty dishcloths home to wash etc. To avoid such traps, enquire courteously as to any rota systems in place, perhaps suggesting the creation of one if applicable.

Remember, it’s always better to be known for good manners over bad!
