Avoiding Lost Items on Airline Travels - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Most people have already experienced or gone through losing items during airline travels. You can avoid lost items on airline travels by following several tips. These include the following:

- You should ensure that you put your name inside and outside of your items. It is much better if you list your itinerary on every luggage checked at the airport so that the airline can easily find you.

- It is best to steer clear of tight connections and late check-ins in order to avoid lost items or delayed luggage.

- You might think that itemizing is a tedious work. However, it is great especially if the airline asks you what other items are found in your bag along with the lost items. When you itemize your luggage, you do not have the tendency to forget anything in it.

- If you want to avoid losing valuable items, it is best to pack them in your carry-on bag. Valuable items may include wallets, laptops, cameras, heirlooms, passports, medication, and jewelry among others. You should also include items that are necessary for traveling such as itineraries, confirmation numbers, contact information, and other documents. These are the items you would not want to risk losing.

- It is advisable to obtain travel insurance. Travel insurance is the best assurance that you would be able to get back your items in case they get lost.

- It can be helpful to consider availing of a tagging service that tags baggage or luggage with distinctive serial numbers. These serial numbers could be linked to you through online database. The tagging service company would contact you if your lost items were found. Conversely, most tagging service companies would charge you an annual fee for availing their services.

- You should also take note of the person checking your bag. Make sure that the person attaches the right destination ticket to each of your luggage. In addition , do not forget to get your claim ticket for every luggage.

In the event that the airline still loses your items after all the precautions you have taken, it is best to obtain a written claim for all lost items. You can do this at the airport, online, or by mail.

Losing items on airline travels can be taxing since you have to produce receipts so you have proof of the value of every lost item in your luggage, and you have to send them to the airline. Accordingly , when you lose items on airline travels, they would be reimbursed based on the depreciated value. This is to say that the airline would not give you the full value of a lost item that you have bought a few years ago. You may also opt for excess valuation protection especially if the items are not covered by any travel or homeowner's insurance policy.
