Whenever most people begin having problems with irritable bowel syndrome, it tends to catch them somewhat by surprise. It certainly has an uncomfortable feel to it and in many cases, it can be quite severe, at times to the point where you may think that you have other more complicated problems. That is why it is important for you to be tested in order to make sure that the irritable bowel syndrome symptoms that you have are not part of a more serious problem, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Once it has been determined that you are dealing with irritable bowel syndrome, there are a number of different things that you may be able to do which will reduce the amount of suffering and discomfort that you are feeling regularly. Believe it or not, one of the main things that can be done is to avoid things that are causing the problems to trigger in the first place. Although you may not be able to get rid of IBS altogether, by reducing the triggers down to a minimum, you can reduce the suffering down to a minimum right along with it.

Many of the triggers that are experienced by those who suffer from IBS include the foods that they eat. This can either be because of a food allergy or because of an inability of the human body to be able to successfully digest these foods in some individuals. A classic example of this is lactose intolerance but you may also be having problems when you eat too many fruits, or perhaps even nuts.

Begin keeping a diary in which you will record absolutely everything that you eat on a daily basis. You should also record how you're feeling, even if you are feeling perfectly fine that day. It will not take very long for a pattern to begin to show itself and over the course of time, you will learn the foods that you have a problem with so that you are able to avoid them in the future. It may seem like a simplistic way of going about finding a cure but in reality, it is one of the most effective ways for you to be able to deal with the problem and get over it. Even though you're going to need to be careful for the rest of your life, in doing so, you can avoid much of the uncomfortable feelings that are associated with IBS.
