Autumn Trends For 2011 - By: Jamie Simpson

Each new season brings exciting changes in women's fashion. New colours capture the stage, different patterns and textures replace the last trends, skirt lengths rise and fall, the overall shape and look of fashion evolves.
The autumn trends for 2011 are rich and brilliant. From captivating colour to luxurious fabrics, the focus this season is on richness and mystery.

Colour
Red, in all tones and shades, is the popular colour. From burgundy to bright red, maroon to crimson, experiment with reds. Find out what shades are best for your complexion. Golden skin tones should choose reds that lean towards orange and brown, while cool complexions should choose reds that are more blue and purple. If you aren't sure, ask your friends which red tops are most flattering. Take a friend along on shopping trips and experiment. Don't settle for colours that make you look ill. Use this trend to your advantage! On a lesser scale, red's neighbours on the colour wheel are also in. Play around with orange and yellow. Metallic colours are also still a hit.

Pattern
A wealth of pattern is coming to women's fashion this season, predominately symmetrical. From all sorts of polka dots and spots to plaids and tartans, fabrics this season focus on visual patterns more than mental concepts, like flowers. Have fun with stripes, dots and plaids, whether in even lines or showing some asymmetry. Look for patterned coats and dresses. These patterns are combined with the other trends, such as red polka dots and plaids full of crimson. Traditional tartan comes with the new fascination for pleats. Patterns are easy to wear, so have fun with them. Pairing pattern with plain separates will give you a balanced look.

Texture
The fabrics of this season are a combination of tough and graceful. The contrast of these trends range from leather to lace. Texture is extremely important during this autumn. Fashion is indulging in the wealth of touch, from the earthy feel of wooden heels to the luxury of fur to the snazzy, space-age atmosphere of shiny fabrics. Unless you are feeling bold, pair the rich textures with basic, simple fabrics, like wool or denim. Allowing one eye catching texture to get the attention is always classy.

Shape
Below the knee skirts, also known as midis, have come back. Longer skirts are generally more flattering than shorter lengths. Finding dresses that hit at the narrowest part of the calf make your legs look their best, whether just below the knee or closer to the ankle. Pleats in any form are trending. Look for pleated skirts and pleats worked in as accents in other garments. Only choose pleated pieces that sit well on your body. Remember that you have to pick and choose with fashion trends, only going with ones that flatter you.

Have fun with your wardrobe this fall. Enjoy the wealth of texture, the richness of reds and metallic colours. Pull out those plaids and dots, and enjoy the cosiness of longer skirts!
