Automatic systems 'still not as good as professional translation' - By: Davis Morris

Although they have come a long way since their beginnings, automatic language translation systems are still a far cry from professional translation services.

This is according to a Today Translations blog by Elliott King, who noted that even the sophisticated technological offerings available today have their faults.

He stated "[The] translation of natural language is still limited because the power of the software and machinery are still holding things back."

The writer went on to say it may also be because the subtleties of language and translation could be more complex that most people thought.

He added: "Even today, the most automatic langauge translation system, including Googles own sophisticated piece of kit that is built in to the Chrome browser, cannot guarantee a perfect language translation of documents."

Mr King went on to state that professional translation services work with their clients in order to get the most accurate versions of their texts.

As well as taking into account the words of the documents, this also involves their meaning, rhythm and tone. In addition, they can take into account allusions or metaphors, he noted.

The need to avoid mis-translations may be particularly strong among businesses at present because of the pressure on them to shine in comparison with their competitors in order to stay afloat in the tough market conditions.

Relying on automatic services therefore may be risky and the problems it could cause could lead to serious financial problems.

By investing in a professional service, organisations can rest assured they will not fall into such traps and will be able to portray themselves in the best possible light.

There have been a number of high-profile cases of automatic translations going wrong over recent years, with one involving the displays shown in railway stations to provide travellers with information regarding services.
