Attending College Without Any Health Insurance Might Well Lead To Disaster - By: Don Saunders

For the majority of college students the last thing they think about is health insurance as is revealed by some recently published statistics that show that about one out of three college students have no form of health insurance. Going to university is an expensive undertaking and merely finding the money you need and arranging your college loans is difficult enough, but you must also think about including suitable health insurance alongside everything else you will need to have.

Naturally you should begin by investigating your parents' health plan if this is applicable as it is quite possible that this will include cover for you during your time at college. However, you do need to read through the plan details carefully because some plans will cover you whilst you are studying at university and other plans will not. Two things that you need to look for especially are conditions concerning age and location.

Most plans will provide cover for children up to the age of 18 or 21 while you are at home and a number of plans will extend this age limit as long as you remain in full-time education. Many plans are however limited to providing cover within a certain geographic area and so, even if you meet the age requirements of the plan, you might find that you will not be covered if you are away from home.

Should you parent's plan will not give you the cover you want then you will need to arrange your own student health insurance and will need to find some suitable providers. Fortunately, this is not too difficult and there are several insurers who provide plans which are specifically designed for university students. So, where should you begin your search?

To start you ought to look at your own college as colleges will usually make arrangements for their own students to receive cover at preferential rates. This does not automatically mean that this is the best plan for your particular circumstances and you will have to look at the details of the plan to see it does indeed meets your needs. Nonetheless your own university is an excellent place to begin your search and will normally give you the best deal. One other thing to think about when looking at your own college is just what medical facilities are provided on campus. Many of the larger colleges will have first class medical facilities that are open day and night, while most of the smaller colleges have far more limited facilities.

Outside of the college itself you can look to the insurance companies as well as a number of publicly funded organizations for cover. In addition, do not forget that there are a number of different forms of plan that are targeted at different student groups. Short-term health cover for example could be attractive to a lot of graduate students and can usually be extended following graduation to cover the period until you find employment and are eligible for an employer's plan. There are also supplemental plans that will provide cover for you for things such as pre-existing conditions that are generally excluded from standard student cover.

Health insurance nowadays is a complex area and you will need to shop around to get a plan that both meets your requirements and also your pocketbook. This is however one thing that you should not ignore because attending university is an expensive enough undertaking in the first place and you do not want to risk your money or your future simply because you are not able to meet the cost of injury or illness.
