Attaining The Highest Listings With The Help Of SEO - By: Anna Stenning

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) has evolved dramatically during its relatively short history. In its earliest beginnings, search engines such as Northern Light, Excite, Lycos and Dogpile were easily manipulated by SEO specialists of the time, using all manner of techniques which are now considered bad practice or black hat, for instance link farming became one of the most important and powerful techniques of the time to achieve immediate success within the search engines.

However the likes of Google, soon put pay to this success, nearly wiping out the SEO Market over night with the introduction of more specific, strict search criteria. This saw the exclusion of many sites for bad practice and in turn was the real starting point of the SEO market as we know it today. Only the strongest and most knowledgeable of the SEO companies survived this period.

Search Engine Optimisation applies to the process of altering a website to achieve top listings (rankings) in the search engines; there are many elements of a website which have to be addressed both on and off page, in order for a site to meet search engine criteria properly without being penalised.

Most SEO Companies will start the optimisation process by firstly evaluating a website, this evaluation covers all aspects of search engine compliancy, and outlines the areas which need addressing in order to bring a website up to scratch to meet the strict criteria required. The second issue addressed is the nature of the business, by defining which products and services the site is aimed at provides the basis for the keywords which will be required in order to effectively target the specific audience.

Once these initial evaluations have been made, and recommendations agreed by the client progress can be made to make the relevant changes to the on page and off page content, external links and various other criteria.

Organic SEO is the process whereby websites achieve natural listings within search engines, using an ethical optimisation process as opposed to using paid methods of advertising such as Pay per Click Campaigns (PPC.

SEO is by no means a quick process; in fact the SEO process is an ongoing one in order to keep a website updated, fresh and at the top of its game. The aim of SEO is to increase the volume and quantity of visitor traffic to a specific website; this in turn increases the potential trade of that specific business, similar to that of customers visiting a shop, the more customers you have visiting the better the chances of making a sale.

This happens when search engine spiders crawl the individual pages of a website, starting with the homepage, if it finds good information and easy access to other relevant pages the spider may choose to index those pages, hence starting the process of obtaining relevance within the search engines. The more a spider crawls a site finding new and informative information, meeting search criteria the better the chance of gaining listings.

No reputable SEO company will either guarantee overnight success or number one listings, as the process of SEO differs so widely throughout the industry there is no exact science or rule of thumb which can be applied to any two sites.

Other issues which have to be addressed is the competitiveness of the industry market for instance if you want top listings for car insurance but are a family run business, you will competing against the likes of all the major car insurance companies for that term, so applying more generic terms is often a way to obtain listings without coming into direct competition with the market leaders, SEO nowadays is an essential part of every online business strategy in order to target the largest audience possible on the internet, via a cost effective marketing strategy.
