When someone decides, for whatever reason, to take up astronomy, their next step will be to get some equipment. However, depending on their prior knowledge of the subject, this may be easier said than done. For many people, a telescope is the essential tool to watch the night skies. For the amateur, who is perhaps keen to start stargazing without knowing a great deal of what they are going to be looking at, the first step should be a trip to a library or book store. There is a vast amount of books on the subject, which will provide plenty of advice. Beyond this, experts recommend using a pair of binoculars, rather than opting straight for an astronomical telescope. Not only will these allow amateur astronomers to get used to looking through lenses for long periods, but they will also allow them to get comfortable with staring at the night sky and navigating their way around it.

After a while, amateurs will be ready for an astronomical telescope, which will allow them to explore the night sky, and their new hobby, in greater detail. Using star charts, and reading magazines and books, will allow amateurs to discover famous sights, and learn how to gain the maximum amount of enjoyment from their astronomical telescope. However, before buying their telescope, they will need to do plenty of research on the various types available, and decide whether they want to go for a refractive telescope or a reflective telescope, and what kind of mount they want to use with it. Of course, each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the decision should be given careful consideration.
