Art as a Means of Investing - By: David Tatham

Art has long been considered a solid and interesting means to investing money. In the current markets this never been shown to be more accurate.

A brief look at the recent history of selling prices of artwork in several of the most well known auction rooms around the world, shows that the market has remained buoyant even in the economic downturn. It is the realization of this that has led to people seeing artwork as being of a real benefit to their long term financial security.

As long as care is taken in the selection of artists and a study the current market in general this will show a steady increase in value, how much of course depends on the artist and the work itself. It should be added that this does not just include paintings as other types of artwork such as bronzes or art objets d'art can be seen as desirable and an asset.

It has recently been felt that the art market is at present more stable than investing money into the gold market, even although this too has seen real growth in recent years. Famous artist's work are of course the most stable and can geatly outweigh the fragility of certain present day commodities.

It has long been agreed in banking circles that certain artwork can be used as collateral, as it has such a sound financial history. Again this shows how well respected art is as the banks can easily reclaim their money by selling a piece of art that has been mortgaged.

It is important to take time in selecting the artwork for purchase as it is vital to understand the current market. It can be useful to look at 'up and coming' artists and invest early as the financial rewards can be so much greater.

Time spent taking advice and researching the subject is always worthwhile. It is useful to have an idea of where it may be sold in the future and which places may offer the best possible price.

As shown, paintings by the highly renowned artists have remained stable even through the countr's current financial difficulties. As a bonus of course, the enjoyment and pleasure of seeing the work on the wall, whilst knowing that should it be needed, the art can be sold with little difficulty and the money released for whatever reason.
