Art History: From Charcoal To Exquisite Paint - By: Allan Michael Taylor

You are probably wondering what Art History is all about. To tell you the truth, the history of art is the only thing which proved that man, no matter where he was born or lived, shared a common culture with other men from different places. Art represented a culture of creativity a culture of art which by itself tells a great story.

The Paleolithic era marked the beginning of Art History; it is when people used charcoals, sticks, stones and even food to create art on cave walls. These pictures depicted the life they lived in a particular place. To see these drawings will give you an idea of what was life like during their time. It was history drawn on cold cave walls. This also shed a light to how imaginative and creative man really is. From prehistoric art came ancient art- the time of the famous Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Greeks, Persian and Romans. This era was incredibly marked by perfect Architectural designs and ingenious Engineering. Ancient art is also one of the most celebrated eras in Art History. From time to time modern men would go back to this period of history where huge engineering feats where built using simple machines and tons of man power and yet incomparable to today's technology. The End of ancient art started the middle ages. The Middle Ages was considered the dark ages of art when bizarre, dark and religious concept was the theme of most artistic creations from paintings to sculptures to architectural designs and engineering. The most important period during the dark ages was the history of early Christianity. This is a time when Christianity was set as the common religion in the Roman Empire. Art during the Dark ages was not looked at as art instead people look at it as a form of reverence to God. It is a Spiritual journey through religious art forms made by artists during the time. After the Middle Ages came the Renaissance Period. The Renaissance period was the most significant time in Art History; its name means rebirth and renewal. The rise of art as an artistic expression of the inner beauty came around during this era. The rebirth of a new perspective about art was popularized and underground artists surfaced during this time. Art during the Renaissance was exciting, interesting and colorful. Although this period was marked by the late gothic, it's extremely bright side overpowered the traces of the dark ages. People became aware of what art was all about and came to view art as an expression, a story needed to be told. The end of the Renaissance period gave birth to a higher form of artistic adventure - the elaborate, rich and glamorous time of the baroque period. 17th to 19th century was the time when kings and queens lavish with art while the commoners go hungry in the streets. This was also the time when Love (Romanticism Era) in all its forms and shapes was the theme for almost all forms of art.

Art History came a long way from just the simple documentation of what was life for a nomad to the creation of models out of stones and other materials refined to excellence. Art will go on as long as there's reason enough to create it. It is after all what sets man apart from animals; the ability to think and create.
