Art For The Investor - By: David Tatham

At one point in time an oil painting was just viewed solely for the pleasure of the work. However throughout the centuries, art has grown into a huge market worth investing in. We all know the great painters of the past, and if you are able to afford to get your hands on one of the drawings, for example by Picasso or Dali, it is widely regarded that in years to come these pieces will go up in value.

But what about the newer painters that have become recognized in recent years in the art world? How do you know which ones will become sought after in the future?

An art investor can look and find the popularity of which painter is currently in fashion, and make a higher return by purchasing that artist's original work in the early days. Many artists are finding ways to duplicate their artwork, this will only make the value of that piece decrease or have little value. Duplicated art pieces are of little value.

There has been a lot of types of art created over the years from modern to folk art. In which, folk art is now becoming more popular than ever. A folk artist is someone who has never been taught. One day, for whatever reason they pick up a chalk and start to paint. A lot of folk artists are older people and some have been through difficult times and discovered that through the work they are able to express themselves on canvas and board which has the added bonus of giving them a new form of income. Throughout America you can find folk artists whose works are much sought after. What they worked on five years ago and sold for little income now brings larger amounts. Many of this type of painter never duplicate their work. Lacking the training and information from art college it is harder for this style of painter to duplicate their works.

Reselling art has become a worldwide establishment. These days the are hundreds of art investors and collectors showing up at exhibitions just to purchase a particular style of art.It is useful to do research and not to make hasty decisions. There are many false works, and by studying art magazines and gallery newspapers much information can be learnt. Using the internet is also an extremely useful means to research some of the many artists.

Fine art will hold it's own, better than the stock market does today. However, whether you are a keen collector or investor, art should be something that you love. Some investors purchase art works and leave them in a bank vault until just the right time to resell and make a good return. But more favourable results will be realized if you find a watercolour that really touches the heart. After all, this is really what art is all about. Everyone would like that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow but the majority of the time, there is more to an art purchase than just the money.
