Are you disposing of your old mobile handset in the correct way? - By: Felicity Lightbody

With major emphasis being placed on protecting the environment, it is wise to use the proper procedures when disposing of any type of electronic devices. In the United Kingdom alone, most households have at least one mobile phone. Thinking of the number of mobile phones that are just thrown in the bin each year, boggles the mind. Most of the materials that the phones are made of do not fit in the category of being environmentally friendly, when they degrade.

When trying to protect the environment, there should be emphasis placed on purchasing products that are eco-friendly. If the product is not friendly to the environment, then a limit on the number that are purchased is an option. Old phones are thrown away at an alarming rate. Most individuals will change mobile phones each time the contract is up. Therefore most are getting new phones every two years. In ten years some families will use at least 20 mobile phones.

The materials that go into making cellular phones and the batteries are not eco-friendly. Most of the materials are considered toxic or harmful to humans and the earth. After long periods of time sitting in landfills, batteries become more lethal. Think about all of the bad chemicals that are being put into the soil whenever old mobile phones are just thrown in the garbage. There are things that each household can do to make sure the phones are being disposed of in a proper manner.

Some phone companies will provide an envelope that can be used to post back the old phone. The company has the choice to dispose of it or clean it up and make it available for other customers. Charities will also provide drop-off sites for old phones. These phones can be donated to individuals that otherwise would not be able to afford a mobile phone.

There are mobile phone recycling companies that have a buyback program. The customer sends the phone to them and in return gets payment for the phone, dependent on make and model of the phone. Another thing to consider is to recycle the rechargeable battery. Batteries have the tendency to explode when exposed to harsh environments. This creates very dangerous working conditions. So it is very important to follow the procedures for recycling batteries and this is best dealt with by properly recycling the phones in the first place.

There are numerous green phones on the market. Most consumers should consider going green when buying their next phone. A green, eco phone has components that will not pose a threat to the environment. As technology progresses, more green mobile phones will become available to the general public. For now, being educated about the potential benefits and making wise decisions when choosing to buy a green phone instead of one that will harm the earth is what will matter.

We must ensure the future generation is made aware that it is a necessity to practice good recycle mobile phones habits. The best way to do this is by teaching them the fundamentals of going green and recycling as children. Once they reach adulthood, good habits have been formed and they will understand the importance of being kind to the earth.
