Are Your Household Electrical Components Up To The Mark? - By: Loren Brailsford

With thousands of corporations selling electric fixings it is extremely important that the components we use in our household are up to scratch. The safe route is to buy our items from reputable retailers and distributors on the high street. There are though, many parts at hand via the internet and from other countries. Primarily they are of a perfect standard but in a small number of cases, they will not be certified to an recognised safety standard. When purchasing these parts we should always make sure that they are recognised for the UK market. In order for a part to be sold in the Great Britain it has to carry the right approval markings. The CE mark is very important and shows that the part is recognised to European safety legislation and that it is appropriate for use and manufactured to an recognised safety standard. This CE mark is usually visible on the packaging of the part as well as the fixing itself but the CE marking can appear in the form of a paper sticker on the fixing.

There are lots of popular electrical brands that are recognised as household names, for example Philips and Osram, but there are plenty more manufacturers out there making top quality items that are more likely to be known within the construction and electric trades. For peace of mind you can choose components from the well known corporations in most of the more accessible shops and high street DIY stores, safe in the knowledge that the components have been made to the best standards of safety. However, if you discover a product and you are not sure of the company, research them on the web and find out details about them. You will more than likely discover they are a popular company with a brilliant reputation within the industry and all their products are approved for sale in the European market.

Also, other aspects must also be taken into consideration when choosing electrical components for use within the house. Make sure the part you are choosing is right for the project. Make sure you know what spec product you need. This should include, voltage, amps and working temperature. If you do not choose the correct product it may lead to overheating that may lead to failure or even explosions. It's not only the part that needs this attention either. Make sure you utilise the correct rated wiring for any electric installation in and around the house. Be aware that products like electric cookers and electric showers require a higher amp rated supply to work safely. Again if the correct wire is not installed it could cause overheating, failure or in extreme situations, fire.

When you are content that your fixing is safe and suitable for your requirement, it's equally important to make sure it is fitted correctly. Always turn the electricity off before fitting any component. If you are not certain which source you need to switch off, be safe and turn off the entire power at its source. Make sure electric connections are tight and only strip enough cable core to ensure a good, tight connection. Poor connections can cause sporadic operation and may also cause sparks. Excessive stripped wire may lead to short circuits and knock out your electricity. Always ensure parts are installed to the right standards and earthed where necessary, before turning on the electricity and testing.

This advice may be straight forward, but there is nothing more significant than safety in our houses. So, always pick the correct part for the job, make sure it holds the correct safety and quality grades and make sure it is installed right. If you are not completely happy installing any electrical part yourself, always use a trained, qualified tradesman.
