Are BlackBerry Games Key to RIM’s Survival? - By: Sam Stephan

Over a month ago, CNNMoney reported the downward slide in popularity and stock purchasing of BlackBerry’s maker, RIM (Research In Motion). The downfall was quicker since 2009. The main reasons were attributed to delay in introducing new technology and faulty leadership against waging competition with other Smartphone and tablet devices in the market. Perhaps that is why Blackberry is changing strategies. What was earlier symbolized as a device for high-level executives because of its PDA and “push” system, entertainment has also made its way through, targeting the younger generation. However, the earlier games did not fare well. Similar to Angry Birds, Angry Farm lost points mainly because it was a more expensive game in comparison to Angry Birds. While it is good to borrow concepts, it is time for Blackberry to show originality, and lately their games have shown a marked improvement.
That is not to say that Blackberry must rely solely on one aspect, since trends change quickly. Blackberry’s assets are their high level of security compared with other mobile devices and their intellectual property value has been assessed as worth more than most others phones. While there is talk of mobile merging, BlackBerry will have a hard time making themselves stand out in terms of uniqueness by offering what other phones do not.
For now, their strategy has to be game oriented. With more people even in the workforce looking for time- out or the waiting user playing to kill time, to the younger ones playing for free or willing to pay a price, Blackberry must offer a whole lot more variety to the user. The genre most currently used is action and arcade games.
‘Towerbloxx New York City’ is designed for the casual gamer and as the name implies: there are stages of achievement that one can reach by placing blocks in a particular order to form a tower. One can choose to renovate it as well. As mentioned earlier, it is a simple game with an average rating. BlackBerry requires games with outstanding ratings. Whether they are catering to the variety of users is questionable, but that their attempts towrd it is commendable. Brain teaser and IQ games have done very well recently, such as ‘Twinoo, the Brain Train’ ‘Barin Driver’ and ‘Connection.’ For mental health, there is MyBrainSolution which provides stress reduction and calming strategies and keeps track of stress levels such as MyCalmBeat, eThink Memory and eThink Balance. There is Nintaii for those inclined towards ‘logic and physics.’
Crazy Survival has topped the charts in BlackBerry games this year, and the game is offered now on Windows Phone as well. The free game has simple mechanics and colorful animation, for which reason it has also been termed as being highly addictive. Blackberry Playbook’s SnowBomber has received accolades because it is a play-and-leave-anytime lighthearted game. One does not worry about saving the game to get to the next level.
With all this and more on the list, one wonders just what is missing. As earlier said, it has to be more than this, and different from the rest.
