To begin, it's crucial to make clear to sufferers of anxiety that while the word “symptoms” is being used to describe the signs of anxiety, it does not mean that anxiety symptoms are indicators of serious health problems or conditions.

However, for the sake of clarity, we'll address them using the term “symptoms”.Usually, this happens due to an abnormal rise in adrenalin levels, which then trigger a set of reactions that tend to affect people physically, psychologically and emotionally.

Once again, it's important to stress that anxiety symptoms are not indicators of severe health problems and that while the sufferer might feel awful at the time, the 'symptoms' represent no threat to the sufferer.

The control-centre that deals with anxiety resides within the subconscious part of the brain. This takes place within a small organ called the Amygdala. This is responsible for regulating and dealing with feelings or levels of fear and aggression which often spiral out of control when the sufferer experiences anxiety.
Anxiety symptoms can be classified into 3 major categories.

These categories outline the different kinds of symptoms experienced.

1. The Psycho-physiological (physical): this produces physical symptoms such as palpitations (elevated heart rate), breathlessness, chest pain, pins and needles, headaches, rashes, sexual dysfunction, shaking/shivering, sweating and dizziness. All symptoms at this level are physical “fight or flight” responses resulting from a rush of adrenalin.

2. The Psychological (behavioural): often characterized by lack of concentration, irritability, obsessive behaviour (OCD), hyperactivity, depersonalisation, insomnia, feelings of losing control, depression, aggression and deep feelings of fear. These feelings can fluctuate, often reaching their apex during an anxiety attack (or panic attack).

3. The Interpersonal: the tendency to attach oneself to other people for reassurance or to withdraw socially in order to cope and avoid situations that might provoke a bout of anxiety. Extreme cases might result in agoraphobia. However, like most anxiety conditions, this is usually overcome during the stages of recovery.

Most people tend to experience anxiety symptoms – ranging from mild to more extreme – at some point in their lives.

While these symptoms are harmless they can make the sufferer feel helpless and desperate, even horrified.However, this is where it's important for the sufferer to remember the word “FEEL” when experiencing symptoms of anxiety.

Anxiety symptoms are feelings and sensations which are triggered by an emotional response, which, like a chain-reaction, triggers an inappropriate physical response in reaction to danger – even when there is no threat present.

So, while anxiety symptoms stem from a protective instinct within us and can cause us no real harm, they CAN begin to impact negatively on our day-to-day life. To the point where it begins to cause damage by affecting how a person lives or leads their everyday life.

It is important to seek the necessary support and help to remove these symptoms of anxiety. Normally this begins when you understand that anxiety stems from the instinct of self-preservation. It's only when these instincts and responses get out of control that they become destructive.

When you appreciate and understand that the symptoms of anxiety are simply an overreaction of the body trying to preserve you, then you will be able to begin taking measures to reassure your mind and body that you are NOT under threat.

While it may feel awful at the time, it's only an exaggerated reaction to a natural response. One which you can learn to overcome and control.
