Antivirus System 2011: One Piece of Software You Don’t Want To Deal With This Year - By: Ms Mindy Matter

Because we depend on our computers for everything from work and communication to shopping and banking, it is essential that we have tools to keep our data safe. Rogue antivirus programs like Antivirus System 2011 use the need for security to their own advantage and for their own financial gain. Are the warning messages you are seeing on your screen real? It can be difficult to know, and this is exactly what the rouges depend on.

What is Antivirus System 2011?

A new year brings new rogue antivirus programs, but they continue to behave in characteristic ways. This can help make it a little easier to identify – and avoid – them in the future. Antivirus System 2011 is from the same family as Security Inspector 2010, Antivirus Studio 2010, and Desktop Security 2010, and it depends on the same methods employed by these and most other rogue programs. Pop-ups and false scan results are used to convince you that you have security issues that can only be resolved if you purchase the full protection of their software. It cannot be emphasized enough that these programs cannot scan your computer or remove threats.

Modes of Entry: Free vs. Paid Versions

The free or trial version of Antivirus System 2011 is downloaded without your knowledge and is usually bundled with malware brought in by trojans. This particular rogue is most commonly distributed through rogue or malicious websites which are set up for this purpose alone. Sites with adult, gaming, pirated, P2P, free, and “questionable” content are vulnerable, as are results for frequently-searched for topics, particularly trending topics. It is also possible that the rogue program is bundled with other malware that affects even legitimate security updates and software downloads from third-party vendors.

The paid or fully licensed version does have one major difference from the free version: the money you spend on it. Beyond that, it is no more able to provide protection or threat removal. It is easy to become convinced of security threats and take up Antivirus System 2011 on its offer to help, but unfortunately, it only relieves you of cash, not security risks.

Getting to Know Antivirus System 2011

This rogue is a virtual carbon copy of its family members and employs the same strategies, including:

* Pop-up ads. These warn you that the rogue has found several “threats” and urge you to purchase the full software. These are just ads in disguise.
* False scan results. Another form of ad, these mimic scan results reports that are issued by legitimate antivirus software and list several threats. These, however, are not dangerous and may in fact be needed for proper functioning.
* Running resident in the background. Whenever you boot up your machine, the rogue starts as well and kicks into its false scan mode. It runs continuously in the background, draining resources from your legitimate programs.
* New icons on desktop and system tray. These typically flash, as if you have a message from your security program. When you click on them, they will display ads or direct you to a rogue website.

An inconvenience at best, Antivirus System 2011 can leave your system vulnerable to other forms of malware, so it is important to take steps to remove it safely as soon as you can.
